Frontier Developments makes creative management simulation games — titles where the player designs, builds and runs a complex system rather than steering a character, and where the appeal lies in the depth of the simulation underneath. The company positions itself at the forefront of that genre, building games around authentic simulation and deep management mechanics.
Its titles are developed in-house for PC and console using Cobra, a proprietary development toolset built and refined over three decades, supplemented by external tools where useful. Rather than shipping a game and moving on, Frontier supports each title after launch with new features and extended gameplay, and builds a community around it where players share what they have made. That model suits a genre in which players invest hundreds of hours in their own creations.
The company has been making games for over thirty years and has built a deliberately varied portfolio across that time. Its next release, Planet Zoo 2, arrives on 13 October 2026, adding fully aquatic species, flying birds and wildlife reserves.
