The Cavendish View

Breaking Barriers. Building Businesses.

ASA International is one of the world's largest international microfinance institutions, providing small, socially responsible financial services to low-income entrepreneurs — most of them women — across Asia and Africa. It is listed on the London Stock Exchange and reports in US dollars.

Its core product is the collateral-free loan without joint liability, made for income-generating purposes, with an average disbursement of USD 347 over a six to twelve month term. Delivery runs through a decentralised branch network, where loan officers meet clients in regular group meetings within roughly 15km of the branch. The Group is broadening the offer into savings, microinsurance through its ASA LifeCare partnership with Turaco, and an MSME proposition designed to bridge the gap between microfinance and traditional banking.

Clients are typically female micro-entrepreneurs earning between three and five US dollars a day, working in services, trading, manufacturing and small-scale agriculture in mostly urban and semi-urban areas, and generally unable to secure credit from traditional banks. Loans start small and grow with the business: clients repay in full before qualifying for progressively larger follow-on loans. The Group serves 2.8 million such clients through 2,232 branches across South Asia, South East Asia, West Africa and East Africa, and employs over 15,000 people. Ninety-seven per cent of its clients are women.

A Temenos core banking migration is underway, live in Pakistan, Ghana and Tanzania, with Kenya and Nigeria to follow.
